Reimagining onboard food packaging through sustainable design
Challenge
Lufthansa and SWISS were looking for a packaging solution that could support their new onboard retail concepts while meeting growing passenger expectations around sustainability, food quality and product information. The solution also needed to accommodate frequently changing menu offerings and multiple food brand partners.
Solution
Working closely with Lufthansa Group, deSter developed a modular packaging concept for the Lufthansa Onboard Delights and SWISS Saveurs programs. The system combines flexible boxes and bowls made from PaperWise, a material produced from agricultural waste, with customizable labels and banderoles that support branding, product information and hygiene requirements.
The packaging was designed to be used across different food concepts and airline brands, helping simplify operations while creating a consistent and premium passenger experience.

Results
- Developed a modular packaging system that adapts to a wide range of onboard food concepts
- Created a flexible solution that supports both Lufthansa and SWISS retail programmes
- Reduced material complexity through a shared packaging platform with customizable branding elements
- Utilized PaperWise material made from agricultural residual waste
- Combined sustainability, food protection and product communication within a single design concept
- Received the German Design Award 2022 in the category Excellent Communications Design
Impact
The project demonstrates how packaging can do more than protect food. By combining sustainable materials, operational flexibility and brand communication, deSter helped Lufthansa Group create a modern onboard retail concept that responds to evolving passenger expectations.
The award-winning solution highlights the value of thoughtful packaging design in enhancing both the customer experience and sustainability performance of onboard catering programs.
